A transformation of an extremely outdated and dysfunctional kitchen in both function and aesthetics was the goal of this remodel. The client expressed that the existing layout only allowed one person in the kitchen at a time. With minimal counter and storage space – food, pots and pans ended up on the counters. The walls blocked the person in the kitchen from being included with family and friends and conversation.

To address the functionality of the kitchen several key walls had to be removed to achieve an open space between the kitchen, family room and dining rooms.

Elimination of the unnecessary walls allowed for a new open plan — designed with a large island as the dramatic focal point. The addition of the island accomplished adding seating, counter space, storage, a large double sink and dishwasher.

Removal of the old fluorescent lighting box and installation of all new LED lighting for the ceiling together with pendant lights above the island, undercounted lighting and special niche and bar lighting gave options for general or task lighting and are now energy efficient.

The aesthetic enhancements are impressive with the custom cabinetry and change of color palette for the island and bar cabinets. Niches in the walls with added lighting and finished off with the same dark woodwork as the kitchen cabinets finish the contemporary look.

Removing the old linoleum kitchen floor and dated carpet from the family room and replacing with a contemporary prefinished hardwood floor continues the clean lines and allowed the homeowner to remain in the home while the project was being completed.

The biggest obstacle was designing and constructing the permanent support post we needed to leave in place while removing the wall extensions and the old peninsula. The solution was to hide it within the cabinetry along the wall next to the microwave —blending with the dark cabinetry.

Superior craftsmanship and attention to details are evident throughout this project — carefully cut seamless granite counter tops, glass tile backsplash adds texture with color contrast, cabinets designed specifically to be outfitted with inserts for organization and soft close drawers. Two full extension pantries on either side of the refrigerator and the extra storage across the island behind the bar stools add balance and additional storage.

Transforming this dull, dated space into a timeless, high functioning, dynamic kitchen far exceeded the client’s expectations.
